Job Vacancy: Community Organiser 

Responsible as part of a team for delivering the core output of Movement for Change, the Community Organiser will be based initially in London but will work in specific communities nationally, to deliver training and organise local leaders to take action and win change through community campaigns.

Salary: according to experience.

a) Duties

• Identify and develop leadership potential in local parties and communities.
• Organise and deliver Community Organising training sessions in local communities nationally.
• Organise local activists to carry out actions and community campaigns which will develop their skills and capacities.
• Manage and mentor volunteers.
• Assist Trainee Organisers to analyse local issues and develop their own Community Organising output.
• Build and maintain quality networks and relationships within local Labour Parties, Labour Movement institutions and communities.
• Contribute to national training and campaigns output, including development of Movement for Change’s training curriculum.
• Fundraise to support our Community Organising and campaigns output.
• Undertake administrative tasks which facilitate the output of Movement for Change nationally.
• Represent Movement for Change at a local, regional and national level.
• Monitor and analyse local, regional and national political developments.
• All Organisers will be expected to be active and creative users of social media. You may also have responsibility for maintenance of Movement for Change’s national website and managing our social media output.

b) Person Specification

• Educated to degree level (desirable but not required) or with previous professional experience.
• A self-motivated individual, able to work for long periods without direct supervision.
• Experience of or developed interest in Community Organising.
• Solid understanding of the principles and practices of Community Organising.
• Experience of managing and motivating volunteers in diverse communities.
• Able to plan strategically and deliver to tight deadlines.
• Strong network of contacts within the Labour movement and strong knowledge of the Labour Party.
• Knowledge of policy and politics, with proven political judgement.
• Ability to draw thematic and policy lessons from local campaigns and to communicate the theory of our Community Organising model to diverse audiences.
• Excellent written skills with ability to write varied content, from detailed research to succinct material for websites and other media.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office, with excellent knowledge and experience of social media.
• Experience and qualifications in delivering training desirable.
• Experience or understanding of collecting, analysing and presenting local data desirable.

Additional information

Organisers will be accountable to Movement for Change through the Chief Executive.

The working week will be 37 hours a week for full-time staff, however extensive travel, weekend and evening work is central to the post and so the spread of these hours across the week will be flexible.

Organisers will undertake intensive training and mentoring as they work towards accreditation with the international Guild of Community Organisers.
